MuniWatch, a MuniWatch LLC product, is built on a simple promise: keep local government in plain sight without cluttering your life or misusing your data. This policy describes the information we collect and how we handle it.
1. Who we are
MuniWatch is a civic-alerts service operated by MuniWatch LLC ("MuniWatch", "we", "us"). This policy explains what personal information we collect, how we use it, and the choices you have. Questions? Email contact@muniwatch.app.
2. Information we collect
Account information: your first and last name and email address, provided when you create an account.
Sign-in with Google or Apple: if you choose to sign in with Google or Apple instead of a password, that provider confirms your identity to us and shares your name and email address. We do not receive your password. If you use Apple’s “Hide My Email”, Apple gives us a private relay address instead of your real one, and forwards our emails to you. We ask for your ZIP code separately, because no sign-in provider gives it to us.
Home ZIP code: provided at sign-up so we can show you the governing bodies near you. This is a coarse location — we never collect precise or device location.
Service preferences: the governing bodies you follow, the document types and topics you choose to be alerted about, and your notification settings.
Payment information: when you subscribe, your card details are collected and processed directly by our payment processor — Stripe on the web, or Apple or Google when you subscribe through the App Store or Google Play. We never see or store your full card number.
Open records requests: if you use our records-request tool, the content of the requests you create and save — such as the agency you address, the records you describe, any date ranges, and the name and contact details you place in the signature block.
Usage data: basic technical and usage information (such as log data) needed to operate, secure, and improve the service.
3. Analytics
On our website we use Google Analytics to understand how visitors find and use MuniWatch — for example, which pages are viewed and where sign-ups drop off. Google Analytics sets its own cookies and receives a randomly generated identifier for your browser. We do not send it your name, email address, or ZIP code.
In our iOS and Android apps we collect app usage and analytics data. This includes diagnostic information — such as crash reports and performance data — that helps us find and fix bugs, and product-analytics data — such as which pages and features are used most and what people search for — that helps us understand how MuniWatch is used and improve it. This is consistent with the data-collection disclosures in our App Store and Google Play listings.
We use this information only for our own internal purposes. We do not use it for advertising, marketing, or promotion, we do not sell it to third parties, and we do not track you across other companies’ apps or websites.
4. How we use your information
To deliver the service — monitoring the government bodies you follow and sending you the alerts and summaries you have requested.
To process your subscription and payments.
To communicate with you about your account, including transactional messages such as confirmations and notifications.
To operate, secure, troubleshoot, and improve MuniWatch.
To understand how MuniWatch is used and to conduct internal research and analytics — including on our records-request tool — that help us improve coverage, features, and the service.
5. Open records requests
MuniWatch offers a tool that helps you draft public-records (open-records) requests. When you use it, we store the drafts and requests you create in your account so you can return to, reuse, and manage them.
A records request you submit to a government agency generally becomes a public record in the hands of that agency, and it may be released to other people or organizations who request it. That disclosure is made by the agency and is outside our control.
We may use the information you enter in the tool for internal research and analytics — for example, to understand which topics, record types, and jurisdictions people request most often, and how agencies respond — so we can improve coverage and the service. We do not disclose or sell your personal information, and we do not use it for marketing or promotion; our internal research does not publicly identify you.
6. Service providers
We share personal information only with the providers that help us run MuniWatch, and only as needed: Supabase (application hosting, database, and authentication), Stripe (payment processing), Brevo (email delivery), and Google Analytics (website analytics only — see below). If you choose to sign in with Google or Apple, that provider acts as your authentication provider: it verifies who you are and tells us your name and email address. If you subscribe through the App Store or Google Play, Apple or Google processes that payment and shares subscription status with us. Public government documents you follow may be processed by Anthropic to generate AI summaries; we do not send these providers more personal information than necessary.
We do not sell your personal information, and we do not use it for advertising.
7. Email communications
When you follow a governing body, you are opting in to receive email alerts about it. You can change what you receive, or stop receiving alerts, from your account settings at any time.
8. Deleting your account
You can permanently delete your account at any time from Account → Delete account, in the app or on the web. No email required.
Deleting your account removes your profile, the bodies you follow, your keywords, your notification preferences, and your notification history, and cancels any subscription billed through Stripe. We may retain limited records where required for legal, tax, or security purposes.
If you subscribed through the App Store or Google Play, you must also cancel that subscription in the store — Apple and Google control those payments, and we cannot cancel them for you.
You can also request deletion at muniwatch.app/delete-account, or by emailing contact@muniwatch.app.
9. Data retention
We keep your account information for as long as your account is active. Once you delete your account, the data described above is removed.
10. Your choices and rights
You can access and update your account information, manage your notification preferences, cancel your subscription, and delete your account at any time from within the app. To request access to or correction of your personal data, contact us at contact@muniwatch.app. Depending on where you live, you may have additional rights under applicable privacy laws.
11. Security
We use industry-standard measures to protect your information, including encryption in transit and access controls on our database. No method of transmission or storage is perfectly secure, but we work to protect your data and to promptly address issues if they arise.
12. Children's privacy
MuniWatch is not directed to children under 13, and we do not knowingly collect personal information from them.
13. Changes to this policy
We may update this policy from time to time. When we make material changes, we will update the "last updated" date above and, where appropriate, notify you.
14. Contact
For any questions about this policy or your personal information, email contact@muniwatch.app.
